- Change your air filter. Your system is running constantly and the demand put on an air filter increases. More people and pets are staying inside and the dirt and dander that is circulated in the indoor air increases. Changing the air filter every few weeks can give an added boost to your HVAC system. Think about how your dryer works. If you do not clean the air filter it takes longer and longer to dry the clothes because you cannot pull in “fresh” air. When you clean your dryer filter of lint, the system works better.
- Do NOT close off rooms. Your system is designed to clean your whole space. When you shut the supply vent (the smaller one with the switch on it) you are closing the end of the supply. Cutting off the circulation of the air. Warm air accumulates and builds in the closed-off duct and more harmful microcontaminants are stimulated to grow. These contaminants and warm air will be pushed out into your open ducts.
- Close your drapes or blinds. When the sun beats down on your home, the glass in your windows tends to heat up. This heat then infiltrates your home. Our ancestors instinctively knew the way to beat the heat was to shade their homes in the heat of the day, keeping the cool air in and the sun rays out.
- Clean your system. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. NADCA recommends HVAC system cleaning in addition to duct cleaning.
